How to Care For Your Rare and Collectible Books

  • Watch the temperature where your book is stored. Books should be stored where it is neither too hot, nor too cold; and with little moisture that can cause mold and warping of the cover.

  • The best temperature for book storage is between 55-65 degrees F., or around the same temperature you are comfortable in your home. Storing books in this range, with some air-flow will prevent the growth of mold.

  • Do not store in direct sunlight which will cause fading of the cover and yellowing of the pages.

  • Do not store in outdoor sheds or garages that are not heated through the winter or cool in the summer.

  • Attics and basements often have fluctuating temperatures throughout the year, therefore they are not good storage areas for your books. Consistency in temperature is imperative. Wide fluctuations in temperature can be extremely harmful.

  • Wooden and cardboard boxes are very acidic and not the best container for your collectibles. Acid is your book's enemy. Conservation suppliers will have acid-free boxes in which your books may be stored safely.

  • Neither is plastic a good container for your book. Plastics have chemicals in them that are damaging to paper. Plastic bags are equally as harmful, as they will create and hold moisture which can promote fungus growth.

  • Always store books vertical on shelves using bookends for support on shelves that are not full.

  • An oversized book may lie horizontally on the shelf if it is not hanging off the edge.

  • If your books must be boxed for a time, be sure to store books flat. Never store, with the spines facing upward and the edges down. This will ruin the binding as gravity takes its toll causing the spines to droop inward.

  • Be very careful of items with which your books are stored. Items have different storage needs and odors can be picked up from items stored improperly.

  • Never dog ear the corners of your book, or use a thick book marker that could break the binding.

  • Laying a book face down to keep your place damages the spine. Use a thin, flat bookmark.

  • Highlighters are popular for study, but will devalue the price of your collectible.

  • Please refrain from writing in your rare book, even with pencil.

  • Tape of any kind or for any reason should not be used. Glue will stain and ruin the fibers of your book.
